Here is a wonderful hand painted stoneware stein signed on the bottom HR with the impressed mold numbers of 189. On the inside of the pewter lid it is impressed with the letters ?HR? ?RZ.? This is a half liter stein and as you can see the art work is extremely well executed. It measures 7 ½" high (not including the handle) x 3 3/4" diameter.
I believe the portrait depicts Frederick III. Following the death of Emperor Wilhelm I in 1888, Frederick III (1831-1888) was crowned Emperor but could not rule due to throat cancer and a ninety-nine day coma. He was succeeded that same year by his son, Wilhelm II.
The firm of Hauber and Reuther, which produced ?HR? steins, was located in Freising, Bavaria, about 25 miles northeast of Munich. The factory was owned by Albert Hauber and Hans Reuther and operated between the years of 1876 and 1909. HR was a relatively small manufacturer, employing only about 30 people at its peak.
