Antique U.S. Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Infantry Rifle Altered to Carbine Length, #427986, .45-70 cal., shortened 23'' round barrel with block-blade front and Buffington ''R'' (rifle) rear sights marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''A'' at breech, trapdoor marked ''US/Model/1884'' at hinge, flat lockplate has spread-wing eagle and ''U.S./Springfield'' below latch, steel fittings include two spring-retained barrel bands (stacking swivel at top), two-piece trigger guard (sling swivel at front), curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, slotted button-tip ramrod; shortened one-piece oil-finished walnut stock has an ''SWP/1888'' (Samuel W. Porter) military inspector's cartouche opposite lock, no nosecap. Condition is about good as altered, the metal with a smooth dark aged patina and sharp edges and markings. Stock is solid with the expected light marks of military use and clear inspector's stamp. Action is crisp and smooth; bore is clean and bright with good rifling. Est.: $250-$400. (Antique)
