<B>An Alexander Howland Smith Forgery of Robert Burns</B></I> signed “<I>Robt. Burns</B></I>”, two pages, 8.5” x 12”, and dated Dumfries, Scotland, 1793. Smith has mimicked Burns' holograph to copy four translated stanzas of <I>Ode to Death,</B></I> a lengthy mid-18th century poem attributed to the King of Prussia. Smith began his forging career in the 1880's, and enjoyed a prolific and profitable career that spanned 5 years, ending in 1893 when he was found guilty of selling forgeries under false pretenses. Smoothed folds, overall light soiling. A clear, dated "Burns" signature.
