Antique Smith & Wesson 3rd Type ''New Model Russian'' Single Action Revolver, #49953, .44 S&W Russian CF cal., 6.5'' barrel with blade front sight, has an unusual flat-top knurled screw ahead of top barrel latch, the purpose of which is unknown (perhaps for a special type of sight, now missing); barrel is marked with maker's name, address, 1860-65-69 patent dates, and ''Russian Model'' on top rib; fluted round cylinder with auto cartridge extraction; frame has the signature S&W large front hinge, distinctive ''saw-handle'' backstrap profile, spur on the trigger guard, and integral gripstraps with lanyard loop at butt, which also has ''1874'' within a rectangular cartouche; plain two-piece oil-finished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1874-78, originally with full-blued finish. Condition is good. Metal surfaces retain slight traces of original blue in protected areas, but are primarily gunmetal gray with scattered light etching and spots of cleaned light-to-moderate erosion; edges are sharp, markings are clear. Grips are sound, smooth and virtually without marks. Action is crisp and smooth; bore is bright with very light frosting and sharp rifling; barrel hinge and latch are strong. Est.: $600-$800.
