Antique Roper Revolving Sporting Shotgun, #525, 16 ga., blued 27'' barrel with variable choke threaded onto muzzle and raised bead front sight; case hardened round steel receiver with separate rear sighting groove attached at front of breech and hinged top loading gate marked ''Roper Repeating Rifle Co/Amherst, Mass./Patented April 10, 1866'', large rear frame section housing the hammer extends into long top tang; blued triggerguard; varnished splinter-type forend with pewter caps at front and rear, and varnished high-comb buttstock with shotgun-style buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1867-68. Condition is near fine, the barrel retaining approx. 85% soft blue blending with light peppering toward breech, approx. 80% deep blue on triggerguard, case hardened parts showing traces of color but mostly silvered out. Stocks are sound and generally smooth showing pleasing color (there is a very well-done wood patch at left wrist above trigger). Roper shotguns feature 4-shot carriers within the rounded receiver; this one features a low serial number and early Amherst production; 16 gauge Ropers are considered to be more rare due to low production numbers. Action is smooth and sure; bore appears clean and shiny. Est.: $2,000-$3,500. (Antique)
