Earthenware crocks have been made since the early 19th century and are an essential part of Americana collecting. Originally used for transport and storage of provisions by food and provisions suppliers, general storekeepers, and homeowners, they hold decorative value today.
These crocks come in a variety of shapes and sizes according to their purpose. Jugs held wine and whiskey. Crocks with wide open tops might have been used for fermenting sauerkraut. Because a number of shippers across the country used these crocks, the crocks vary in the composition of their clay and their glazes. They are marked according to manufacturer, with numbers according to their capacity. The maker's mark, glaze, and clay show where the crock was made.
This salt-glazed brown and cream provisions #2 shoulder jug is a Red Wing Pottery piece from Red Wing, Minnesota and is approximately 75 years old. It is a #2 within a heart (the marking is blue) and is 14 1/2 inches tall and 9 inches in diameter on the bottom. The cream color is 8 1/2 inches from the bottom, where it joins the brown color, which extends another 6 inches to the top and encompasses the fingerhold for the jug.
It is is perfect condition!
Shipping is determined after checkout.
