This wonderful antique etching is a portrait of Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania at the end of the 16th century. Sigismund reigned as prince from 1581-1598, again in 1599 and one more time in 1601 before being driven out by Michael the Brave. His anti-Turkish policy caused a rift in Transylvania that eventually became a civil war. This etching was made by Dominicus Custos to be part of his Atrium Heroicum Caesarum which was essentially a portrait gallery of sovereigns, statesmen, army leaders and noted salespeople of the 16th century published between 1600 and 1602. This amazing print has been matted in black and mounted in a bone colored wood frame with gold inner perimeter for a sleek finish. The unique matting and framing presentation of this piece was individually selected and created by Le Chateau?s renowned master framer, Jeanette Shoenrock, and bears her signature on the back. This is a remarkable piece of European history that would be an amazing and affordable addition to any collection of 17th century artifacts.
