Here?s a really fine and wonderful early needlework item! First I can say that I believe this is a real early picture quite possibly from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It?s a great needlework picture and in very good condition actually. The detail and dimension is exceptional! The needlework is precise and every single stitch in place. I?m looking at this picture with a jewelers loop and it appears that the base material is early hand woven cotton with a background painted in watercolor as is the face and hands of the woman. The thread appears to be a combination of a raw silk, chenille and wool. In some spots appearing to be sort of stump work, with sections of the embroidery almost looking like trapunto - raised high above the surface. The picture is on a stretcher just like an oil painting and one early hand wrought nail is holding the stretcher in place. The picture has no rot or deterioration just a few acid burn rusty type spots which is expected with fabric of this age but they are very minute. It measures 12? x 10 5/8? overall and the sight size is 9? x 7?. The glass in the frame is a bit brittle but clear and it appears to be original. This came from a very fine estate. ...
