The Victorians knew how to set a glittering table, and a big part of the charm was a mirrored centerpiece designed to reflect the flowers it held, while doubling the dazzle of nearby candles and the chandelier above.



Now it's rare to find these sets intact, since so many of the mirrored plateaux broke or wandered off to become vanity trays. I've seen only three other complete sets online lately: two silver-plated and priced in the $2000 - $3000 range and one of sterling for almost $40,000.


This charming example is rare not only in being complete but also in its style, a combination of Art Nouveau with Arts and Crafts. It's fascinating when these two design currents intersect, as they sometimes did around 1900. The highly dimensional floral and foliate motif is executed with more stylization than the traditional Nouveau manner and angular Arts and Crafts outlines introduce an anticipatory hint of Art Deco geometry. This suggests possible origin in Scotland (think MacKintosh) or Eastern Europe, where items from the Art Nouveau period often departed from curvy forms. We acquired the centerpiece from a specialist dealer based in the north of England, which gives another nod to Scotland, but the two "Depose 616" marks on the base are more typical of the Continent.


The wood-backed plateau measures about 14.25 by 7.5 inches and rises about an inch above tabletop. The jardinière is the same size at its top (being smaller at the bottom) and is 4.75 inches ...
