Handcrafted and hand painted grotesque bird figure by the Martin Brothers, dated 12 April 1905. This figural vessel is executed in salt-glazed stoneware, modeled in the form of a fantastical bird standing upright on talons, with a removable head. The surface displays textured detailing throughout the body and feathers, with naturalistic tones in mottled blue, brown, cream, and green. The head serves as a lid and is hollow, fitting snugly into the cylindrical neck opening of the body. The base of the figure is affixed to a circular black-painted wooden stand. The piece is incised with markings reading "R.W. Martin & Bros. London & Southall 12-4-1905," indicating the maker and studio location in Southall, London. Martin Brothers pieces are notable for their whimsical, often grotesque interpretations of animals and human forms, especially their iconic bird jars.
