Franz Marc was killed in action in March 1916,in France. He was one of the most significant figures of the German Expressionist school of painting. Expressionist distort to the point of delirium. "Marc, "says Bulliet, "is the inventor of strange beasts that were never seen in heaven above, on the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth. He distorts to his heart's content in the interest of 'pattern'". His horses are violently red, green, and blue and they retain just enough reality to give meaning to his beautifully designed compositions. This is a 1937 original print from the National Committee For Art Appreciation headed by Eleanor Roosevelt. The prints were made and then the project was abandoned and the collection was put in a warehouse for over twenty five years. These lithograph prints were discovered in 1962 and are considered to be of the highest quality.
