Antique Italian Copper or Copper-plated Uniface pushed Wall Plaque, Brother Girolamo Savonarola in his Cell, Measures 120 x 162 mm. Weighs 355.6 grams. Reverse has an attached hook for wall hanging. Frond shows Brother Savonarola, robed and seated in a circular chair, holding a book, in front of a simple desk that holds a few other books. Atop the desk, on the left, is a large crucifix on a stand. On the wall behind, a plaque of the Virgin and Child. Below the design is a line of text, in Italian: FRA. G. SAVONAROLA NELLA SUA CELLA. Brother Savonarola, leader of a puritanical reform movement, became the effective ruler of Florence from November 1494 until his execution by hanging and burning, with two of his followers, in the public square of Florence on May 23, 1498. He was 45 years old. The movement he started continued underground long after his death. and today he is considered one of the precursors of the Protestant Reformation.
