This type of antique hardwood and metal manufacturing spools was used in textile factories and mills at the end of the 19th century. They were necessary to keep the thread wound tightly as it ran through the shuttles and looms of cloth manufacture.<p>

Women often worked on these machines in factories, which cropped up as a direct effect of the Industrial Revolution, which began at the end of the 18th century. No longer were textiles made chiefly in the home. Wooden spools and bobbins and the looms on which they ran were among the greatest innovations of the time. They revolutionized textile manufacturing because many textile goods could be manufactured at higher speed than by hand. Each mill had its own machine shop which developed the factory machinery: each machine had it own bobbin shape and design. Spools and bobbins were made by hand from several types of hardwoods: these include oak, walnut, and possibly maple.<p>

Wooden spools and bobbins are no longer used today as they are better suited to cotton and natural fabrics and function best at the relatively lower speeds of the Industrial Revolution. As well, it was time-consuming to create them by hand. As synthetic fabrics began to be used, the use of wooden bobbins and spools, then, declined commensurate with that change.<p>
