Antique French Model 1822 Military Percussion Pistol, by Mutzig Arsenal, altered from Flintlock at St. Etienne Arsenal, #33, approx. .70 cal., 8'' barrel, with raised-post front and notched rear sights, stamped with numerous proof and other marks including ''Mdle 1822 bis'' on top tang; beveled lockplate with long pointed rear tang is marked ''Mre. Impale de Mutzig'' below brass frizzen filler; hammer is uniquely curved to align with nipple; brass mountings include single wide barrel band with long tang adjoining the serpentine sideplate, triggerguard (with iron tang), and buttcap (with iron lanyard ring and iron backstrap extending to top tang). Varnished halfstock of European hardwood also bears numerous markings including ''33,'' ''St. Etienne,'' and a circular cartouche over ''Mutzig'' on raised apron opposite lock. Condition is very good: the iron parts being gunmetal gray with scattered erosion (especially at nipple area and muzzle), the brass a soft patina. Stock is sound having light age/use marks. Original cupped iron ramrod (also serves as a powder measure) is replaced by a plain brass rod. Metal and wood markings are mostly sharp and clear, action is very strong; smoothbore is clean. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
