Antique English Brass-Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss, by Barnett (London), NVSN, approx. .80 cal., the 15-3/8'' heavy round pin-retained brass barrel bells to 1.75'' at muzzle, has a 2-3/8'' iron top tang, is unmarked and without sights; smooth lockplate has a separate pan, is pointed at tail and marked ''Barnett'' in a vertical curve behind cock, steel trigger and trigger guard, brass curved buttplate, round screw escutcheons opposite lock, and two ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod; smooth one-piece hardwood fullstock with what may have been a glossy ebonized finish originally, has a vacant 1.25'' oval German-silver nameplate atop the wrist. Condition is about very good, the lock with light rusting and clear marking, the other iron surfaces with heavier rust/pitting (will benefit from a sympathetic cleaning), the brass with a smooth aged patina. Stock is smooth and solid with most varnish finish remaining, thin scratches (or tight hairline cracks) emanating from the rear lock retaining screw and lockplate tail. Gun appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole. It likewise seems original and correct; however, the lack of proofmarks (unless hidden under the barrel, etc.) may indicate mfg. outside of England, or possibly a later period. Action functions; smoothbore shows deep black-powder etching but is clean. Est.: $2,000-$2,500. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
