Early American antique country furniture pine step stool vigorously scalloped and made with dovetailed construction, a rare feature not found on most stools. This is an exceptional example of country furniture, identical in form to a cupboard in a historical house in New York State's Hudson Valley. Unusual shelf indicates possible kitchen use or bedstep use, in addition to footstool use. Top has two roundish spots that may be from hot pots. This stool retains traces of several coats of paint on its inner surfaces: red, green, and white, dry-scraped off outer surfaces years ago. Inside still has crusty old white paint on sides and on shelf, red paint still on inside of scalloped skirt. Upside down shows remains of old white and green paint. Edges of top are thumb-molded and expertly dovetailed. 16-1/2"W x 9-1/2"H x 9-1/2"D. Folk art at its best for country collectors.
