Antique Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter, #57714, .44-40 cal., 1.75" period shortened barrel, originally with blue and color case hardened finish, smooth walnut one-piece grip, black powder frame, front sight has been removed. Matching visible numbers; "5508" on the interior of the loading gate. Mfg'd 1880. Revolver is in fair overall condition, with the metal surfaces having gone to an even dark brown patina, with scattered light surface erosion. Markings are worn or were removed when the barrel was shortened. Grips with impressions; showing age and wear, becoming proud at the butt. Action with only one click, holding at full-cock. Bore is dark with moderate erosion; rifling is visible. Includes Colt Factory letter, indicating the revolver was shipped July 23, 1880 to Simmons Hardware Company, St. Louis, Missouri, with 50 Guns in shipment. Letter confirms the finish as blue and caliber; however, barrel length and stocks are not listed. An interesting black powder 1st Gen SAA that was cut down to belt length. Est.: $1,800-$2,400.
