Antique Colt Lightning Medium-Frame Slide-Action Rifle, #69414, .38-40 CF cal., blued 26'' octagonal barrel, with buckhorn style open sights, marked with the maker's name, address, and 1883-85-86-87 patent dates in two lines on top flat, and ''38 Cal.'' at breech; blued 15-shot tubular cartridge magazine; blued receiver with sliding bolt is marked with serial number on lower tang; oil-stained two-piece checkered walnut sliding forearm, matching buttstock with steel crescent buttplate. Mfg'd 1893. Condition is very good. Barrel, mag tube, receiver and buttplate show a smooth gunmetal-brown patina with sharp edges and lettering. Stocks are sound and smooth showing light marks of age and use, lightly worn checkering on forearm, and a later coat of varnish. Action is smooth; bore shows overall black-powder erosion with pronounced rifling. This medium-frame model was the first Lightning rifle made, sharing cartridges with the companion Colt Model 1873 Single Action and Model 1878 Frontier revolvers. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
