Antique Colt Engraved First Model Dragoon, Ca. 1849
Six shot revolver, .44 caliber, serial number 4668, German silver blade front sight, and hammer notch rear. Near full coverage engraved in typically seen New York style, with arabesque foliate and floral scrolls on a punch-dot background with accenting wriggle work and fan pattern at top of backstrap. Cylinder and rammer are engraved to match. Hammer is engraved with wolf's head motif. Manufactured in 1849 with a 7 1/2" part round / part octagon barrel. This cap and ball revolver is one of only about 7,000 made. The serial number matches on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and back strap with the last three digits on loading lever and wedge. The engraving on the cylinder has covered the serial number. The NY barrel address is clear and readable from the right side. The patent marking on the frame is fully readable and has "U.S." stamped underneath. The engraving is a period style, the action functions properly and the bore is fair. The Colt has a pair of antiqued ivory grips that fit well and comes with a set of walnut grips in a period, red velvet lined case with a working key. Condition: Very good, with nearly all of the original finishes turned a homogenous brown-gray chemical patina with scattered areas of light handling marks and freckling. Provenance: Gordon Kibby Collection
