Antique Cast Iron Coal Heated Hand Iron. This antique iron has a latch that can be turned to allow the top of the iron to lift off so that hot coals can be inserted. There is a vent for air just below the latch. On one side, there is a corrugated surface that was used to iron pleats into a fabric. The handle is wood, to keep the user from dealing with a hot iron handle. The iron is 6.75''H x 7.25''L x 3.75''W and weighs 7 pounds. On the top surface of the iron, under the heat baffle, there are embossed words which presumbably are the name and location of the manufacturer. The charcoal iron was popular from the late 1800's through 1930's in rural areas. In early versions red-hot coals were placed in the iron and kept burning with small bellows and air vents that could be adjusted. The smoke exited through funnels that were turned away from the user. Later versions burned charcoal that was lighted in the iron and allowed to burn to a glowing heat. Special clean-burning fuels were marketed by the iron manufacturers for use in their irons. American models became quite sophisticated during the early 1900's, nickel plated, with dual funnels and multiple swinging vent doors.
