<td width="100%">
Early 1800 eight sided cast brass Pan box from India. "pan-dan," or box, was used to hold pan-rolled betel leaf stuffed with betel nut, lime paste, and spices. A native custom of eating betel leaves (to aid digestion and freshen the breath) was introduced at the Mughal court in the seventeenth century.
The production from the seventeenth to nineteenth century would involve 4 artisans to make this box: a molder who created the shape using the lost-wax technique; an etcher who drew the designs on the surface; an engraver who chiseled out the areas around the designs; and an inlayer who would apply silver,brass, or jewels to the boxes. The surface was then blackened to enhance the beauty of the inlay or engraving. The box is quite heavy and very well made. It measures 6 3/4" by 4 1/2" and is 2 3/4" deep. A pad lock would work on the front latch of this.

Very old and interesting piece.
