Antique British Pattern 1842 Percussion Musket, likely issued to the Army of India, NVSN, .71 cal., 39'' round barrel with block front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and notched rear sight, has a spade-shaped spring latch underneath at muzzle, and is marked with ''(crown)/GP'', ''(crown)/V'' and ''P/8'' proofmarks at breech; lockplate with simple line borders has a prancing lion below the matching hammer; brass mountings include the heavy triggerguard (marked with what appear to be Indian characters) having a rear finger-rest and iron front sling swivel, buttplate, two sideplate screw escutcheons, nosecap and three ferrules retaining the steel button-tip ramrod; hardwood fullstock with three iron barrel keys. Condition is very good, the iron parts finished ''arsenal bright'' with clear markings and scattered discoloration, the brass with an aged patina. Stock (missing its front sling swivel) is stripped of finish but sound and smooth with Indian characters stamped on both sides of butt. Action is extremely stiff; smoothbore has moderate erosion but should clean. Est.: $400-$650. (Antique)
