Antique British P-1853 Three-Band Infantry Rifle-Musket, Altered to Breechloading Cartridge Rifle Utilizing the Snider Patent, NVSN, .577 CF cal., 36.5'' round barrel, with block-blade front and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sights (unmarked); steel receiver, hinged breechblock and flat lockplate are likewise unmarked; brass triggerguard (with iron sling swivel) is marked with what are perhaps Chinese letters on its rear tang; brass buttplate and nosecap; three spring-retained iron barrel bands (top band with sling swivel); two sideplate screws with brass ''eared'' escutcheons; hardwood fullstock with slotted/cupped steel ramrod. Condition is good, the steel parts being an overall gunmetal gray with scattered discoloration and surface rust; the brass with an aged patina; the crude hardwood stock is solid and was likely sanded at some point. The entire gun is heavily coated with cosmoline (or similar grease). Action does not hold full-cock; bore is clean with deep rifling. This hinged breechblock cartridge alteration, invented by American Jacob Snider, was widely used until the advent of the Martini-Henry action in the mid-1870s. Est.: $250-$500. (Antique)
