Antique British P-1777 Short Land Pattern Flintlock Musket, Altered to a Cavalry Carbine, #NVSN, .75 cal., 28.75" round barrel with cannon-turnings at breech has two deeply-impressed Birmingham proof marks; "banana" lockplate has a "(crown)" below the integral pan and "Tower" in a vertical curve behind the reinforced cock. Brass furniture includes one-piece trigger guard, peaked buttplate, serpentine sideplate, and two thimbles retaining the button-tip iron ramrod. 9" iron saddle bar and ring are retained by the rear sideplate screw and thru-hole with threaded nut at right side. Walnut fullstock has raised aprons at either side of lock and behind barrel tang, tall comb, step at lower thimble. Likely mfg'd latter half of the 18th century, originally as a musket. This carbine was altered ca. 20th century by shortening the barrel and stock, and adding the saddle bar/ring. Condition is good as configured, the barrel is clean gray gunmetal, the lock dark brown, both with clear markings. Stock is sound having the expected marks of great age and use, with a 4.25" wood repair above the lock at right, several moderately-deep gouges at left midpoint, a 2.5" crack emanating from the lower thimble. Rear sight and nosecap are missing, as is upper sideplate/lock screw and sling loop from trigger guard. Action is sticky, smoothbore shows uniform moderate-to-deep corrosion. Est.: $800-$1,200.
