Antique Austrian Flintlock Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, by Anna Oesterlein of Vienna, #851, .69 cal., 14.5" round barrel marked "Anna Oesterlein" at breech, with block-blade front and raised-notch rear sights; beveled lockplate has a "tree"-like mark behind reinforced cock and "851" ahead, has integral waterproof pan; iron fittings include loop trigger guard with rear finger-grip, flat buttplate, serpentine sideplate made integral with 6.5" saddle bar and ring, front band/nosecap marked "23"; 3/4-length stock of oil-finished hardwood has 7" raised cheekrest at left, button-tip iron ramrod. Mfg'd ca. 1830s-40s. Condition is good, the iron surfaces being bright with scattered light oxidation. Stock is sound and smooth. Edges and markings are sharp, action is very stiff, smoothbore is bright showing occasional moderate erosion. The entire gun is coated in amber-colored varnish, which has alligatored over much of the surface. The lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with bushed touchhole and correct parts. Reportedly, A. Oesterlein was one of several government contractors. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)
