Antique Astrolabe, solid bronze casting, with engraved graduations and stamped calibrations, circa approx. 1400 to 1700CA. The navigational device measures approx. 4-1/2” across, not counting its loop-typehangar. Shows small stamped numerals with graduations and the number “1555” at bottom center (possibly a date). These ‘mechanical computers’ were used to solve problems such as time of day or night, location ofcelestial objects, and times of sunrise or sunset, used for navigational purposes. The device shows a very dark uncleaned patina and is absolutely a genuine antique, and the markings appear to be marked somewhat laterthan the body of the device possibly indicating long use. Used as a curiosity until the 19th century, these were among the earliest navigational instruments and what Columbus and early sea captains used to plottheir course. Est: $800 - $1,600
