This antique hand-made rectangular-shaped basket is made of split white oak. It represents a long tradition of Appalachian basket making. <p>Appalachian baskets have been made for generations to carry, hold, and measure produce and assist rural Appalachians in a variety of daily tasks. Often named for their use or size: such as egg, coal, or bushel baskets--basket forms evolved from they were meant to carry, hold, or measure rather than to simply accommodate those items. This basket has been a storage basket. <p>Changes in Appalachian agriculture contributed to the decline for practical use baskets, which makes one such as this one even more valuable today. The Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century and onset of tourism in the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah National Parks in the 1930s spawned a demand for decorative baskets. Basket makers began producing baskets in colors, sizes, and shapes to fit decorative demands and imagination. Colored splits were added, and baskets were re-sized and sometimes reshaped.<p>Numerous hardwoods in Appalachian forests have supported decades of basket making. Oak is most often used for its ease in splitting and the strength and flexibility of the splits. White oak and swamp chestnut oak are most often used.
