This pine needle basket is old and unusual! Made of pine needles, a form of basketry practiced in the Appalachian culture, it has a handmade handle which sets it apart. This handle is made of what appears to be fence wire with a ceramic overlay which is painted. The design of the overlay appears to be a purple fruit with leaves. It appears on either end of the basket.

My estimate with the appearance of the basket and its handle is that it is about 100 years old.

The basket itself is a woven circular basket 9 inches in diameter. Where the handle "pinches" it in, the basket is 8 1/2 inches in diameter. It has a 6-inch base, and it is 2 1/2 inches on the side from the base to the top. The basket is in very good condition overall. There are a few areas where the ceramic material has broken away from the handle, and the paint is wearing away, but that adds to the charm and authenticity of this piece.

This is a special treat for any collector!
