Antique American Muzzleloading Percussion Shotgun, altered from a Model 1816 U.S. Springfield Flintlock Musket, NVSN, 12 ga., 28'' unmarked round barrel has low blade front sight, percussion nipple threaded into top of breech; long beveled lockplate has brass pan remnant, marked ''(spread-wing American eagle)/US'' ahead of hammer, ''Spring/Field/1835'' vertically behind; steel furniture includes two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, flat buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, serpentine sideplate, single barrel band at front of cut-down oil-finished walnut stock. Condition is good as altered, the steel being an overall deep rust-brown, the barrel breech markings obscured, lockplate markings clear (eagle is weak). Stock is sound showing the expected marks of age and use, and crude workmanship where shortened at front. Action is strong and crisp; smoothbore shows overall fairly light black-powder erosion. Est.: $250-$350. (Antique)
