American antique Federal secretary-desk with tambour-top, New York City or Philadelphia maker, ca. 1810. Outstanding Best of Class 2-part mahogany butler secretary has exceptional details including 4 finely reeded swelled columns which are almost free-standing, and finely reeded borders all around base. Upper section has tambour doors enclosing 4 birdseye maple-front drawers. Lower section has fold-down flap opening to desktop over the long drawer (red felt covering in flap is worn but easily replaced if desired). Bottle drawer at bottom center, flanked by cabinet spaces. Meticulous cross-banding is used to create paneled effects. Rich antique color (photos a little dark). 42"W. x 47"H. Excellent, original condition including brasses. AUATHENTICITY GUARANTEED. This best quality secretary is a major example of fine American Federal furniture. Nearly identical piece in "Treasury of Early American Homes" by Pratt, page 79.
