Beautiful, rare antique cast bronze sitting female figure that appears to be holding a basket, made by the Dogon in Mali. Piece has a wonderful & very old encrusted patina that could date the piece to at least the 19th century & perhaps older. 3" H X 1" W X 1 1/2" D. Bronze casting, by lost wax process, has a long history in Africa going back to the 14th or 15th centuries, as seen in the beautiful wall plaques in Benin that record images of warriors who fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin.  & perhaps used in a family’s shrine or taken into the “society house”  which is similar to a meeting place, church, shrine or used for various rituals including those ceremonies conducted by a healer of for funerary events, including being buried with the dead.
