I would date this interesting piece of social history and unusual advertising collectible to the early 20th century, maybe even Edwardian.
The case is made from a nickel or chromium plated brass with the brass showing through in a few places from use over the years.
What makes this particularly special is the perpetual calendar integrated into the end of the propelling pencil. The numbers are turned to correspond with the appropriate day of the week, making this truly "perpetual" and indeed, can still be used today.
There is a ring around the shaft of the case which when pushed up the shaft pushes the pencil out and into use.
This pencil was clearly an early advertising give-away for a British Insurance Company as the engraving shows: Car & General Insce Corp. Ltd / 1 Queen Victoria Street London E.C./ Capital GBP 250000, 30 Branch Offices, Income GBP175000.
A great addition to your collection in very good condition. Measures 4" long when closed.
