This charger represents the evolution of handpainted porcelain in both America and Europe in the mid-to-late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stamped "BAVARIA" in green ink on the inner base of the back, it is a product of the fine porcelain manufacturing tradition in Austria, Germany, France, and England which grew out of Johann Bottger's cracking, in the early 18th century, of the porcelain code first laid down by the Chinese centuries before. Once porcelain could be manufactured, and then colored well, as mineral paints were introduced by the Meissen factory in that same era, it was left only to cultural tastes to design the porcelain. Rococo styles were created by the Sevres company in the 18th century and perpetuated throughout the 19th century, the enlargement of the range of motifs could continue as those tastes changed.<p>

By the end of the 19th century and into the 20th, perhaps spurred by the Victorian predilection for nature, the Aesthetic Movement, led by the Englishman, John Ruskin, among others, influenced artists to draw inspiration from the phenomena of nature. The artist then would use the technology of the paints and the porcelain and the tradition of handpainting to produce works with flowers, plants, and birds in delicate detail.<p>
