Anti-Slavery Tokens: Two Great Examples. The first, a British Conder Token circa 1795, portrays a chained, kneeling man on the obverse with the legend "Am I Not A Man And A Brother". The reverse shows clasped hands with the legend "May Slavery & Opression sic Cease Throughout The World". The edge is lettered "Payable in Dublin or London". An especially nice, clean piece in extremely fine condition.

The second is a U.S. Hard Times Token featuring, on the obverse, a chained, kneeling female above "1838" with the legend "Am I Not A Woman & A Sister". A laurel wreath with "Liberty 1838" at center and "United States of America" around the rim fills the reverse. According to United States Tokens 1700-1900 by Russell Rulau, "In late 1837 the Anti-Slavery Society, located at 143 Nassau Street, New York, commissioned the firm of Gibbs Gardner & Co, of Belleville, N.J. to strike copper tokens (HT81, the Kneeling Female piece)." This example is very clean and in fine condition with a pleasing medium chocolate patina.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
