Anti-Copperhead Broadside, "A TRAITOR'S PEACE", 16.5" x 23", Washington, D.C., ca. 1864. A Thomas Nast illustration from Harper's Weekly is used here on newsprint to evoke immediate outrage at the thought of wasted Union lives in the event of a Confederate victory. A triumphant Jeff Davis stands on a grave symbolizing all of the Union dead and shakes the hand of a humbled Yankee amputee. This unappealing image is coupled with a list of Confederate conditions for peace that would likely outrage most Northern voters. Folds and light aging, yet free of unacceptable defects. Very good condition. The Republican Party rightly feared that a war-weary North might not re-elect Abraham Lincoln to a second term in November, 1864. Broadsides such as this one sought to counter the growing anti-war movement. They must have worked.

Shipping: Large Flat (view shipping information)

Important notice:</
