United States Army general (1898–1975) who commanded the force defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was famous for his brief reply to a German surrender ultimatum: ‘Nuts!’ TLS signed “Tony McAuliffe,” one page, 7.5 x 9.25, American Cyanamid Company letterhead, April 11, 1960. McAuliffe writes to the wife of David Shulman in Florida. In part: “I returned from a trip to Canada to find the bronze plaque which you so kindly sent me at the request of Dr. Shulman. I feel embarrassed that I have not thanked you earlier for sending it to me and am doubly embarrassed by the fact that I was forced to leave and thus miss my appointment here in New York with Dr. Shulman. The plaque is a splendid souvenir of our battle at Bastogne which I shall always treasure.” Wrinkling, trimmed edges, and several pieces of old tape along the edges, otherwise fine condition.
