Twentieth-century Renaissance man Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) possessed a staggering intellect and prolific nature resulting in scores of works, including novels, screenplays, stage plays, poetry, essays, operas, and symphonies. He was proficient in 13 languages and invented two: Nadsat, the Anglo-Russian slang of <I>A Clockwork Orange</B></I> (1962), and Ulam, a prehistoric language for the film <I>A Quest for Fire</B></I> (1981). <I>The Kingdom of the Wicked </B></I>deals with the birth of Christianity during the reign of Nero, and was Burgess' "preparation" for the six-part television miniseries <I>A.D.</B></I> (1985). The front endpaper is signed <I>"Anthony Burgess"</B></I>.
