Anthonis Mor van Dahorst (Utrecht 1516/19 - 1575 Antwerp) workshop, Portrait of Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba, oil on canvas, 96 x 71 cm, beautiful, carved, gilt frame 18th cent. (Wo).€ 22.000 - 30.000 US $ 21.780 - 29.700 A version of this painting can be found at the Musee des Beaux Arts, Brussels. The Duke of Alba (1507 - 1583 Lisbon), Spanish general, statesman, and commander-in-chief of the armies of Emperor Charles V., achieved numerous victories in the wars against France and its papal allies, as well as conquering Portugal for Philip II in 1580. As Governor-General of the Netherlands he was responsible for the capture and public execution for high treason of the leaders of the opposition, Counts Egmont and Hoorn, in the market square of Brussels. Goethe's tragedy "Egmont"(1788) offers a, historically inaccurate, account of these events and provided the basis of Beethoven's overture. Alba's oppressive regime led to the uprising of the Netherlands in 1672, and the severity with which he fought for Spain and the Catholic faith is said to have made him the most hated man of the 16th century.
