Anthemius, A.D. 467-472.<p>AV tremissis minted at Rome. Diademed and cuirassed bust right of Anthemius/Cross within wreath. 1.41 g. RIC 2848 [as R3], Lacam 126. VF25 ICG.Minted at the close of the Western Roman Empire, this coin embodies the last breath of the former glory that was Rome. Much of the West was now destroyed and ruled by invaders, among them Teutonic warriors. The great European cities of Augustus, Hadrian, the Severan dynasty and the tetrarchy were in ruins. Western civilization had crumbled, only to be kept alive and nurtured to an extent in the East. It is ironic, that the last emperor be Romulus Augustus, nicknamed Augustulus, that the emperor's name should hark back to the legendary founder of Rome, as well as to the father of the Empire: cancrizans, like a crab's facing claws, like the beautiful and enigmatic rondeau by the 14th century composer Guillaume de Machaut, Ma fin est mon commencement. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M.
