Antebellum New Orleans. Undated letter, 3 pp.
Antebellum New Orleans. Undated letter, 3 pp., but apparently late 1848 to early 1849. Topics include Gen. Taylor, Van Buren, slavery, Negroes, the piano business, yellow fever, Negro music store troupe, and steamer disaster. "...You certainly had a very narrow escape on the fiery Steamer. You was among the lucky ones & saved for another disaster...Persons has added another Negro to his establishment, not quite as black as Jack and looks for all the world like Parsons. They have got a sign out 'Pianos tuned & repaired at short notice,' and have reduced the price of tuning, & Jack has a best Chickering at the door on which he plays Lucy Neal & Jim along Josey, drawing round the establishment a troupe of ragged negroes much to the respectability of the music business...The yellow is bad here now...Two persons are coming out from N.Y. to set up a music store here...Herz Pianos sell like hot cakes...We are not much excited here with politics. I would not be surprised if Gen. Taylor was elected President by Congress with a very small majority...If Van Buren is elected in '52 the South will have an independent government sure...The Slavery subject pushed by the North can produce no other results. Such is fate. I suppose there will be no slaves in North America in the course of time...." Neatly penned. Fine and unusual content!
