Union General (1835-1917) and member of the illustrious 'Fighting McCooks' family, who participated at Perryville, Stones River, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge, and who later became a senator from New York. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, Daily Register Print. & Pub. Co. letterhead, August 5, 1878. Letter to T. L. James, in full: "Col. Squire whom you perhaps know, will place before you certain letters recommending Miss Gilford for a position, which, he says will be surely vacant in a short time. The letters are from gentlemen of high character and certainly Col. S— is entitled to a good deal of consideration. Will you please look into the matter and give the young lady and her friends as good a chance as possible." In fine condition.
