L'Aurore
oil on canvas
20 x 38 in. (50.8 x 96.5 cm)
Estimate: $8,000-12,000
Provenance
Private Collection, Santiago, Chile
Related Works Thomas Alexander Harrison, LE GRANDE MIROIR (Sotheby's, New York, April 23, 1998, Lot 32)
Harrison exhibited widely and frequently from the early 1880s through the first decades of the 20th century. His work is indicitive of the Salon style so evident in French circles of the time, yet explores the spirituality and quietude associated with other American painters of the era, such as Charles Sprague Pearce, Edward Simmons, Arthur Wesley Dow, and George Hitchcock. His approach to his favorite subject is more an exploration of aesthetics than subject, yet captivates the viewer in its simple evocative beauty.

Lois Marie Fink, in her book American Art at the Nineteeth-Century Paris Salons in reviewing The Wave (exhibited in 1885), describes Harrison's painting of The Wave in language that captures so much of his oeuvre, and L'Aurore in particular as "a horizontal composition of oriental spareness divided between sea and sky, inviting the viewer to the same reverie that is inspired by the endless motion of the sea itself."1
