Another owner JAMES HART (1828-1901) Path by a River, 1862 signed and dated "J. M. Hart 1862" (lower right) oil on canvas 85/8 x 151/8 in. (21.9 x 38.4 cm)
Estimate: $8,000-12,000
In the 1860s James Hart continued to develop what was to become his mature style, in which he explored the natural world around him. His painting would take him increasingly far afield from his home in New York City. In this decade his body of work would reflect the rural landscape found outside of the city proper, taking him as far as the Adirondack regions of upstate New York, the Berkshire mountains of western Massachusetts, and the White mountains of New Hampshire. While Hart found himself in the outer reaches of the American countryside, far from the home of the Hudson River School, he would steadfastly employ the tenets of painting and intellectual appreciation for the natural world established by his predecessors. While he was Scottish by birth, and trained in Düsseldorf, he would remain a proponent of the first truly American school of painting, clearly evident in his appreciation and thoughtful recording of the American landscape .
His interest in bucolic rural life would remain the central theme throughout his career, and the quiet beauty and clear light in Path by a River, 1862 reflects those days that he recorded for over half a century.
