painted circa 1890
Estimate: $45,000-65,000
Provenance
Collection of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Graham Reeves
Although Herman Herzog was to immigrate to the United States sometime in the late 1860s or early 1870s, he was to remember and paint scenes of a trip he made to Norway in 1855 throughout his professional career. This trip, encouraged by his teacher Hans Gude (1825-1903), had a particular impact on Herzog and his life's work as an artist, and resulted in a large body of work that depicted Norway and the Fjord region.
Interestingly, the mountain and lake vistas, recorded while Herzog was still living in Europe, would also became the hallmark of his work in America. Perhaps his most successful and appreciated work in the United States was that of the American west, which would closely resemble similar views recorded in Norway in 1855. As Herzog's influence declined in the years following his death in 1932, the similarity in works from this trip to Norway were often confused with scenes painted much later in his career of the western United States.
Such was the intensity of his lifelong interest in Norwegian subjects, and the majesty of the Fjord region, that a list of 1,000 paintings compiled by Herzog of his work was to include Norwegian subjects consistently throughout the list. The earliest recorded being number 6, From Nero Fjord (Norway) and the last, as number 1,000 Norwegian Waterfall in Hallindalem.
