Although based in Italy for almost forty years, Anne has been a regular exhibitor in Ireland, with solo exhibitions at the Peppercanister Gallery in particular. Donnelly was born in Belfast and grew up in the midlands, in Co. Carlow. She studied first at the College of Art in Dublin in 1953, then a year later at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 1956 she relocated to Paris to study at the École Julienne where she met her husband, acclaimed Italian writer Carlo Mazzantini. Donnelly's work is inspired by her natural environs as well as by the ancient ruins of Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli located near her studio. Anne Donnelly is a member of DUNA which is part of the International Association of Women Artists and her works are to be found in numerous public collections including, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland; AIB; Office of Public Works, Ireland; National Self Portrait Collection, University of Limerick; George Moore Famine Collection; Irish Embassy in Rome; Accademia Britannica, Perugia and the Shannon Collection, Boston among others.
