Annapolis, MD - $20 Original Fr. ??? The Farmers NB Ch. Annapolis, MD
Annapolis, MD - $20 Original Fr. ??? The Farmers NB Ch. # 1244
This lot partly consists of three letters dated in September and October 1873. Two of the letters are addressed and/or received from the two banks in question. The third letter is on Treasury Department - Office of the Comptroller stationery. All three letters discuss the redemption and attempted redemption of two mutilated national bank notes. Apparently, attorney John O. Willson of Marion, South Carolina, was able to exchange his mutilated $5 on the Manufacturers National Bank of New York with a good note from that bank. However, the directors of the Farmers National Bank of Annapolis, Maryland refused to redeem the fragmented $20 that is the fourth item in this lot. Not a single Original note is in the census for the Farmers and this may be as close as we will ever get for this bank. The note fragments have been adhered to a thin piece of paper with perhaps around 10% of the note present. This note is not graded and there will no returns on this lot for any reason.
