Anna Peters (1843-1926), Bouquet of Summer Flowers, c. 1905
The present painting is a work of the German painter Anna Peters and dates to the period around 1905. It depicts a brilliant bouquet of irises, daisies and gold rain in a vase. While her earlier works are characterized by a strictly realistic style, Anna Peters turned to a much more impressionistic style from 1890 on. Accordingly, the composition offered here is a charming and very characteristic example of the late work of the painter. Anna Peters is one of the first women in Germany who succeeded in making their living from their painting.

The painting is well presented considering its age. It is signed lower right ‘Anna Peters’. There are some areas of older retouching at the lower parts of the depiction as well as at the lower edge of the painting. The frame is painted in gold and shows light traces of age. The framed work measures 78 x 61.5 cm and the stretcher measures 73 x 57.5 cm.

Anna Peters (1843-1926)

Anna Peters received her artistic training from her father Pieter Francis Peters (1818-1903), who was a painter and specialized in the depiction of landscapes. She was also deeply influenced by her uncle Christian Mali (1832-1906), who was an animal painter and a follower of the Munich School. Anna Peters mainly painted still lifes, working in different media, such as drawing, watercolors and oil. Her works can be found in Braith-Mali-Museum in Biberach, Germany.
