GENERAL SIR ROWLAND SMYTH K.C.B.
oil on canvas
76 by 61cm., 30 by 24in.
Provenance:
By descent from General Smyth, to the previous owner, Co. Waterford
This painting depicts Smyth as a young officer in the 16th Lancers, circa 1825,
in India. He was born in 1803, son of Grice Smyth and Mary Broderick Smyth (née
Mitchell) of Ballynatray, Co. Waterford, and married a daughter of Lord
Tenterden in 1839. As an interesting aside, Smyth’s sister Penelope Caroline,
became Princess of Capua when in 1836, she married Carlo of The Two Sicilies,
eldest son and heir to the King of Sicily and was responsible with her husband
for building the famous Capua Palace at Sliema in Malta. Rowland Smyth as a
major commanded the 16th Lancers and was wounded at their most celebrated battle
of Aliwal against the Sikhs in 1846. The battle is still commemorated annually
by the regiment’s successors, the Queen’s Royal Lancers. On their return from
India the regiment was garrisoned in Ireland under Smyth’s command for several
years. He was later promoted to general and knighted. He died in 1873. A
photograph of the general, taken circa 1860, accompanies this lot.
