Anglo-Californian Gold Mining Company Stock Certificate
Anglo-Californian Gold Mining Company, incorporated in England 5 November 1851. Certificate No. 98979, issued on 6 January 1853 to George Edward Rutley of Dover, Esquire, for one share, 10 shillings. Signed by [illegible] and Thomas [Illegible], directors, and George [Illegible], president. U/C. Measures 8.25" x 7.5”, trimmed tight at left. This trans-Atlantic company had its headquarters in Britain although the mine was located in the southern region of the Mother Lode, near the New Almaden Mine of Santa Clara County. Most of the stockholders were English and one can see from the style of this certificate that little creativity was exhibited in its design, in contrast to the colorful and artistic certificates of American companies. To the British such a certificate was simply a legal document. Its very early date near the beginning of the Gold Rush makes it interesting and rare.
