Angels With Dirty Faces (Warner Brothers, 1938).
Angels With Dirty Faces (Warner Brothers, 1938). Japanese B2 Poster (20.5" X 28.5"). This poster was released between 1947 and 1948, the first two years of the MPEA (Motion Picture Export Association). The MPEA was set up in 1946 after the war ended to help spread the release of American-made movies in occupied Japan, both new releases and movies not released before the war. This is from the first Japanese release of this film. Director Michael Curtiz ("Casablanca") delivers a fast-paced crime drama about two tough kids growing up in one of the roughest parts of New York, Hell's Kitchen. Rocky Sullivan (James Cagney) becomes a hood while Jerry Connolly (Pat O'Brien) becomes a priest. Humphrey Bogart enters the film as Cagney's sleazy lawyer. The drama unfolds when Cagney and O'Brien reunite in the old neighborhood. The suspense builds against a back drop of gangsters, gunfire and mafia mayhem. This title is considered one of the Warner Brother's best and all posters from this title are rare. This is the first time we have seen this exceptionally pretty, early Japanese release. The poster is unrestored. It was folded and has tackhole tears in three corners and no paper loss in one. There is a clean five-inch tear from the right border down through Sheridan's breast and into Cagney's face. If one were so inclined, this poster would be an easy fix for a talented paper restorer, but we believe most collectors would be very happy with its current condition. Fine.
